As I took photos of pelicans swooping, flying, and diving for their dinner, I began to wonder whether our choices are a result of evolution.

A little earlier, I saw scores of dead minnow fish on the beach and wondered what happened. Then I understood – every day, around the same time, the minnow show up with the tide, and the Pelicans expect their arrival.

But why do they make the same choices every day? The pelicans, I understand, but the minnows know they are swimming to their death. So, why don’t they take the risk of swimming someplace unexpected to live another day?

In the same way, I think I resonated with the minnow – for a long time, I seemed to be swimming to the same place every day, knowing the result felt like a dead end, but uncertain where else to swim. But, for a change, I chose a new direction, we’ll see where I lead myself.

If you feel you have any dead ends in your own life, why do you choose to swim towards them every day instead of towards something else?
