On my recent trip to San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua I had meltdown number two of my trip. Unfortunately, I was sick, the journey was long and hot, the process to cross the border frustrating and I was sorry I went. When I got to San Juan del Sur, I wanted to leave immediately.

As I contemplated how I would make it through the five days I had booked to be in Nicaragua and stewed in my victim regret at leaving Costa Rica, I began getting teary-eyed. I recognized another bad habit of mine – adapting to things that make me unhappy instead of making alternate decisions that bring me joy. That bad habit along with the people pleasing, has led to years of dissatisfaction with my life and I’m not willing to tolerate this anymore.

So there I was in a coffee shop, feeling badly for myself and semi crying, when I suddenly found my power of choice. I realized all I had to do was change my plans and go back to Costa Rica where I knew I would be happier. So, without concern for who I might make unhappy or inconvenience and choosing happiness over adapting, I changed my plans.

Sometimes it takes a detour to figure out where you want to be.
